During the “Golden Age of Flying”, traveling seemed lavish. Men wore their nicest suites and drank on champagne as they kicked back their feet and relaxed as the plane took off. The average leg room in the 1950’s and 60’s was 6 times larger than the average leg room today. What went wrong? Do we blame it on technology, plane engineering, or the economy?
As the culture of our world shifts, so does the airlines industry. It’s crucial to remember that people want things fast, easy, and affordable. To price flights at cheaper rates, the airlines believe adding more seats while provide cheaper rates.
The thrill of flying has decreased tremendously; is this a positive or a negative? While flights are more affordable, in the food and beverage department, realistically we are paying double the price for prepackaged sandwiches and pretzels. Not to mention, customer service has become a low priority in the airlines industry. The comfort and happiness of passengers seems to not be a concern. Several news outlets are expressing their anger in the airlines industry. From the CEO to the flight attendant, the airlines must get back to their roots and start respecting their clients.

The most recent buzz is American Airlines economy seating’s leg room decrease. In perspective, they are reducing their seating down to match low economy airlines like Spirit airlines. Why are they doing this?! The answer is simple! They believe reducing this leg room will result in more seats on the plane. Ultimately, this will result in a reduction of price!
